What do you do when there’s a hurricane blowing off the coast and the schools are closed? You go to Target, that’s what you do. I know this because I went this morning, along with every other mom that has school aged children. While I was there I picked up 2 of the e.l.f. Eyeliner and Shadow Sticks. For $3 each, I couldn’t pass them up. I got one in Plum/Purple and the other in Smoke/Black. The double-ended stick twists up so no sharpening is required. The shadow side has a creamy rounded end and the eyeliner has a nice point on the opposite end. I have never used a shadow in the form of a stick before so I had no idea what to do with it at first. I used the Smoke shadow from the Smoke/Black stick and applied it on my lid, from lashline to crease. Then I smudged it along my lower lashes and connected the color at the outer corner. I just followed the shape of the hollow of my eye. Then I took a fluffy eye brush and lightly blended along the edges and in the crease to diffuse any demarcation lines. I lined my upper lashes and upper and lower waterline with the black liner. Seriously, this took me all of 30 seconds and I was pretty impressed with the result! I think it’s the color of the Smoke shadow that makes it. It’s a shimmery dark silver/gray that glides on so smoothly. It is so similar to color Gunmetal from the Urban Decay Naked palette, except not as dark and Gunmetal has glitter.
The purple shadow from the Purple/Plum stick didn’t perform as well. The shadow wasn’t as creamy and soft. The liner was a bit difficult to get to show up on me. Because I’m an Olive with dark brown eyes, I usually wear black liner. Unless it’s a really pigmented, soft liner like the UD 24/7 Glide-On’s or the L’Oreal Color Chromes, I don’t fare well with colored liners. The texture was a bit hard and waxy. I think this stick might work better on Ivory because she has those beautiful green eyes. I tried to find a color that matched best with the purple shadow and MAC Shale was probably the closest, although a bit lighter. So it gave me an idea to layer Shale over the Purple stick shadow. I also did it with Smoke and Gunmetal.
I have to say that I was disappointed with the wear time of the shadow. It started to fade within 2 hours. But when I layered a powder shadow over the cream, it was much better. I definitely wouldn’t use this without a primer underneath.
I really love the ease of use and the color of the Smoke shadow. It makes doing a smokey eye so easy and fast. I think this would be a great product to keep in your bag or at your desk so when you need a quick touch-up, you have shadow and liner in one stick and no need for any other tools. For $3, I think it’s worth it.
